President Bola Tinubu reportedly removed Emefiele from office on Friday night with immediate effect.
Emefiele was instructed to immediately turn over control of his office after being suspended to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will serve as the CBN governor while the investigation and reforms are being implemented.
Late on Friday, unconfirmed rumors spread that members of the Department of State Services had taken the suspended CBN governor into custody.
The DSS’s spokesperson, Peter Afunaya, however, said he was unable to confirm the arrest.
